Anderson bridge was established under the supervision of Engineer Robert Pierce to replace the overloaded Cavenagh Bridge. Due to the Singapore River's flourishing trade in the 1880s, Cavenagh Bridge cannot support the increasingly heavy traffic into town.
Anderson Bridge was done in 1910 and named after Sir John Anderson, the Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner for the Federated Malay States (1904–1911). It was officially opened on March 12, 1910.
