Singapore Art Museum opened its doors in 1996 as the first fully dedicated visual arts museum in Singapore. Since then, they have built one of the world's most important collections of contemporary art by artists from Singapore, Southeast Asia, and Asia.
SAM lies a wide-ranging collection of contemporary and pop art pieces. A great diversity of art forms is evident in the museum, from traditional paintings and sculptures to installation art and moving media.
The museum is easily accessible by public transport. The nearest MRT station is Bras Basah along the Circle (orange) line, located within walking distance of the scenic Fort Canning Hill and several other prominent museums, such as the National Museum of Singapore and the Peranakan Museum.
About contemporary art. Contemporary art is made by artists who live and work in the present, especially the 21st century. Art of today can be considered both contemporary art and art from the past. In the case of Southeast Asia, this could be as a result of emerging in the 1970s or, in Singapore's case, at a crucial juncture during the 1990s. The contemporary art examines the current society, the problems surrounding us and our world.
