Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest shrine in Singapore. It was founded by Indian pioneer Naraina Pillai, a government clerk from Penang who was in the company of Sir Stamford Raffles on the latter's second visit to Singapore in 1819. The Temple is one of the country's most prominent places of worship for Tamil Hindus to honor Goddess Mariamman.
In addition, the Temple was a center of Hindu communal activities and served as the registry of Hindu marriages during the Colonial Period.
It was not only a religious house for the Hindu community. It was also a refuge and shelter for newly arrived Indian immigrants until they found accommodation and work.
The Temple is open daily from 7:00 am to midday and from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
