Heap Seng Leong Singapore

Step back in time at Heap Seng Leong 協勝隆, a rare and nostalgic coffeeshop in Singapore located at Blk 10 North Bridge Road. Unlike most modern kopitiams, Heap Seng Leong preserves the charm of old Singapore, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. This traditional coffee shop, run by Mr. Shi Pong Shu and his son Shi Ting Chow, has been serving customers since 1974, maintaining its authentic Nanyang coffee and toast experience.

Inside, you'll find a simple, unadorned setting with whirling ceiling fans and fluorescent lights, reminiscent of the 1970s. The decor is minimal, focusing on functionality rather than aesthetics, which adds to its nostalgic appeal. Mr. Shi, often seen in his signature green-white striped pyjama pants and white singlet, continues to prepare coffee and toast in the traditional manner.

Heap Seng Leong is famous for its Kopi Gu You, coffee with butter, a unique offering that enhances the Robusta coffee's bitter notes with a buttery, savory flavor. This adds a silky texture and a hint of caramel to the coffee, making it a must-try. The menu includes other essentials like kaya butter toast and poached eggs, completing the traditional Nanyang coffee shop experience.

Reminders of the past are scattered throughout the shop, from takeaway coffee packed in used milk tins to bills tallied with an abacus. While the original wooden chairs have been replaced, iconic round marble-top tables remain, offering a tangible connection to Singapore's history.
