About Heap Seng Leong Coffeeshop

Step back in time at Heap Seng Leong 協勝隆, a rare and nostalgic coffeeshop in Singapore located at Blk 10 North Bridge Road. Unlike most modern kopitiams, Heap Seng Leong preserves the charm of old Singapore, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. This traditional coffee shop, run by Mr. Shi Pong Shu and his son Shi Ting Chow, has been serving customers since 1974, maintaining its authentic Nanyang coffee and toast experience.

Inside, you'll find a simple, unadorned setting with whirling ceiling fans and fluorescent lights, reminiscent of the 1970s. The decor is minimal, focusing on functionality rather than aesthetics, which adds to its nostalgic appeal. Mr. Shi, often seen in his signature green-white striped pyjama pants and white singlet, continues to prepare coffee and toast in the traditional manner.

Heap Seng Leong is famous for its Kopi Gu You, coffee with butter, a unique offering that enhances the Robusta coffee's bitter notes with a buttery, savory flavor. This adds a silky texture and a hint of caramel to the coffee, making it a must-try. The menu includes other essentials like kaya butter toast and poached eggs, completing the traditional Nanyang coffee shop experience.

Reminders of the past are scattered throughout the shop, from takeaway coffee packed in used milk tins to bills tallied with an abacus. While the original wooden chairs have been replaced, iconic round marble-top tables remain, offering a tangible connection to Singapore's history.

Heap Seng Leong is located at 10 North Bridge Rd, #01-5109, Singapore 190010, near Lavender MRT station (East-West Line). They open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For inquiries, call 65 6292 2368. Note that they do not serve pork or lard and do not have Halal certification.

Experience the nostalgic atmosphere, savor the Kopi Gu You, and enjoy the simple pleasures of a traditional Singaporean coffeeshop at Heap Seng Leong.

Heap Seng Leong: A Nostalgic Singaporean Coffeeshop Experience

Heap Seng Leong is a nostalgic coffeeshop located on North Bridge Road near Lavender in Singapore. It is known for its old-school setting, reminiscent of the 1970s with its tables, chairs, tiles, and décor. The coffeeshop opens from 5am to 5pm and has a Malay stall offering Nasi Lemak, Mee Siam, and Curry Puffs.

Inside Heap Seng Leong, the walls, tables, old-school titbit containers, and the aroma of butter create a nostalgic atmosphere of Singapore in the 1980s and 90s. This place has been around since 1974.

Uncle Shi, is often seen making traditional kopi in his white singlet and stripped pajama pants. You can order Kopi Gu You, local coffee with a slab of butter, giving it a caramelised flavour and softer notes. Some may be uncomfortable with butter in coffee, but it provides a sustained energy high and kicks the body into fat-burning drive.

The aromatic Robusta coffee has the right amount of bitter notes, and the butter makes the coffee more silky. A set with toast and eggs is available for only $3.60. The kaya toast is thick, fluffy, charcoal-grilled, and full of nostalgia.

Heap Seng Leong is located at 10 North Bridge Road, 01-5109, Singapore 190010. The telephone number is 65 6292 2368. It is open from 5am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday.

Trying to find an authentic breakfast experience, and the internet led me to Heap Seng Leong. I was confused at first since they didn’t accept any card payment, but we managed to get cash. Tried their breakfast package for $4 (kaya toast, eggs, any choice of coffee), and also the curry puff from the shop beside. I loved the kaya toast! It’s warm an... see more

Wanted a traditional Kopitiam experience and this was it. The toast was delicious and the vibe was nice. The curry puff stall outside is a great addition too.

First full day in SG for the GP and jet lagged like no other, decided to finally cross off Heap Seng Leong off the list. A short commute over to the old school coffee shop for an iced coffee and kaya toast set. There were only a few people in the restaurant and like many, weren't sure how to order until the Uncle pointed us to the "kitchen." Ordere... see more
