About Komala Vilas Restaurant, Singapore

Since 1947, Komala Vilas has been a culinary cornerstone in Singapore, renowned for its authentic Indian vegetarian cuisine. Nestled in the heart of Little India, this iconic restaurant and its adjoining sweet shop have become iconic destinations, drawing locals and tourists alike. In a historic moment, Komala Vilas was honored by a visit from Singapore’s Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, who shared a meal with India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi in 2015. This event underscored the restaurant’s status not just as a dining establishment but as a symbol of cultural exchange and friendship between Singapore and India.

Established by Mr. Murugiah Rajoo, a visionary who journeyed from Tamil Nadu, India, Komala Vilas remains a family legacy now in its third generation. Oh yes! Komala Vilas is super popular, especially around lunchtime. Expect a bit of a wait, but trust me, the food is worth it! Maybe try going a bit earlier or later to beat the rush.

Highly recommend this place for authentic South Indian food. Loved their Dosai, Curd rice, idli set. The coconut chutney is the secret sauce. They even have Kothu Parota which is very flavourful. Tried the Samosa and Masala Tea on a rainy day and just hit the right taste buds.

I've been eating here since 2007. They used to make excellent, consistently wholesome food. The quality has suffered considerably over the years. The dosas are overly fermented, burnt, and sour to the taste, the filter coffee is like so much hot water, and even the South Indian meals feature tasteless side dishes with sometimes uncooked vegetables.... see more

The staff/server were helpful. The service was prompt. The food quality (ordered dosa and idly) could be improved however it wasn’t bad. The restaurant has congested seating as there is table everywhere. It is crowded and air conditioning don’t keep up with crowd and open door. There are other vegetarians restaurants in Little India which are hig... see more

Landmark restaurant, coincidentally restaurant started year & Indian independence year are same. Had evening tiffen combo & Kothu parotta. Restaurant smell, dosa, mini iddli, all chutneys & sambar were excellent. Ven Pongal, kara Pongal & Vada was okay. Kothu Parotta taste was little disappointing, probably I had high expectations.

Simple no fuss place for authentic South Indian vegetarian food. It can get super crowded so try to avoid peak times, especially lunch. Portions are absolutely huge and prices more than fair. For a first timer, it can be overwhelming as the menu is large and staff are not there to help, just to get you your food so you can get out for the next gues... see more

Authentic South Indian restaurant at Serangoon road. Dishes are tasty and good. Rates are very competitive. Ambiance is well maintained and service is slow. Mini tiffin combo is worth for the price. Masala tea also tastes good. Staircase to the first floor dining area is little steep. ♿️❌

We had lunch (South Indian meals). Paid SGD 25.72 for two plates. Taste was good and hot. They use disposable cups for water, which I don’t like. Stainless steel cups are great with meals. Toilet and wash area needs improvement. Overall it is a good place for vegetarian food.
