Completed in 1889, Read Bridge is a 280-meter short bridge named after William Henry Macleod Read, a prominent Scottish resident in Singapore and Consul for the Netherlands. Locals call the southern head of Read Bridge "Cha Chun Tau" which means "timber boat jetty" in Teochew Chinese.
Red Bridge was also known as Green Bridge because it once dressed the barriers in green paint. Its beauty is the intangible cultural heritage it represents.
